  3. Anion Exchange: After passing through the cation exchange unit, the water moves to the anion exchange unit. Here, anion exchange resin beads attract and exchange negatively charged ions (such as chloride Cl⁻, sulfate SO₄²⁻, and bicarbonate HCO₃⁻) in the water for hydroxide ions (OH⁻). This stage removes negatively charged ions from the water.


  4. Mixed Bed Exchange: Some demineralization plants include a mixed bed exchange unit as a final polishing step. This unit contains a mixture of cation and anion exchange resins in a single vessel. The mixed bed further removes any remaining ions and ensures high-purity water.


  5. Regeneration: As the ion exchange resins become saturated with ions, they need to be regenerated to restore their capacity. Regeneration involves passing a concentrated solution of acids (for cation resins) and bases (for anion resins) through the resin beds to remove the captured ions and replace them with hydrogen ions (H⁺) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻), respectively. The regeneration process typically includes rinsing steps to remove excess regenerants and restore the resin beds to their working condition.


  6. Rinse and Discharge: After regeneration, the resin beds are rinsed to remove any remaining regenerant and excess ions. The rinse water is typically discharged, while the regenerated resin beds are ready to resume the demineralization process.
